Best Methods to Keep Carpet Clean

Carpeting adds warmth and comfort to a home, but it can also lead to an increase in allergens and make a home look unkempt when soiled. While many people are moving away from installing carpet, it is still a timeless, affordable flooring option that can look new for many years with proper care.

When was the last time you had your carpet professionally cleaned? Many people go years without the deep cleaning that professional carpet cleaning services can provide. If your carpets are stained or smell like stinky feet and pets, it’s time to consider paying an expert to come in and give your carpets a good cleaning.

Annual carpet cleaning by cleaning services from Around the Clock Cleaning remove pet dander, lift smells, and restore the carpet fibers to their original height. However, did you know that there are things you can do year-round to keep your carpets from looking worse for wear? Here are 4 surefire ways to keep your carpet clean in between professional cleanings.

No-Shoes: Think about all the places you go every day. Your shoes pick up dirt, feces, and countless other things during the day. When you wear shoes in the house, you’re transferring bacteria and other substances to your carpets. Consider a no-shoes policy and stick with socks or slippers in the home.

Vacuum Daily: The more you vacuum, the less dirt there is on the carpet’s surface. When dirt and debris stays on carpet for even a short period of time, it can get pushed down into the fibers and leave your carpet looking shabby. Don’t have time in your day for daily vacuuming? That’s okay. Vacuuming between 2-3 times a week on a regular basis should do the trick.

Eat in the Kitchen: Is your carpet littered with stains from food and drink? Having a snack while watching television should be an occasional treat and not an everyday habit. Keep food and drink in the kitchen to avoid hard to clean stains.

Blot Stains Immediately: Accidents happens, especially when you have kids or pets. If something does get spilled on the floor, blot it up right away. The longer the stain penetrates the carpet, the harder it will be for you or even your trusty professional carpet cleaning service to remove.

Carpet Cleaning Methods

You want the carpet in your home or business to look fantastic. It is one of the first things that people will see and it can tell a lot about you as a person or business owner. Even after vacuuming dirt can remain in the carpet and can stay there for some time. In order to keep your carpets in tip-top shape and extend their life it is recommended that the carpets be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. One method that you see advertised is the dry foam method. Is it right for you?

This method is used by some professional (and some do-it-yourself) cleaners and is more commonly known as shampooing the carpet. A dry foam is applied to the carpet, is brushed in and is supposed to release the soil from the carpet fabric. It is then allowed to dry, and is then sucked up with the shampoo machine or a vacuum. If done improperly it can leave a sticky residue or over moisturize a carpet and it is not terribly effective at getting dirt deep down in the carpet.

Shampooing the carpet is not bad for the carpet when done properly but it should only be done in the cases of light stains and regular cleanings. It is not something that will be able to get gum or other harmful substances like that out of your carpet entirely. Where this does excel is that it is fast, simple, inexpensive, and uses a minimal amount of water which will lead to a quicker drying time.

Typically most professional cleaning services do not use this method simply because it does not get deep enough into the carpet and it is not able to get the tough stains out. We prefer to use the wet method or more commonly known as steam cleaning. With that method the carpet is preconditioned with a chemical that liquefies the soil in the carpet fibers. Water is then heated to near the boiling point, pressurized, and injected into the carpet. After 10-15 minutes the carpet is vacuumed up after a complete cleaning. This is the most widely used method in the world and is recommended by most cleaning professionals.
