You want the carpet in your home or business to look fantastic. It is one of the first things that people will see and it can tell a lot about you as a person or business owner. Even after vacuuming dirt can remain in the carpet and can stay there for some time. In order to keep your carpets in tip-top shape and extend their life it is recommended that the carpets be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. One method that you see advertised is the dry foam method. Is it right for you?
This method is used by some professional (and some do-it-yourself) cleaners and is more commonly known as shampooing the carpet. A dry foam is applied to the carpet, is brushed in and is supposed to release the soil from the carpet fabric. It is then allowed to dry, and is then sucked up with the shampoo machine or a vacuum. If done improperly it can leave a sticky residue or over moisturize a carpet and it is not terribly effective at getting dirt deep down in the carpet.
Shampooing the carpet is not bad for the carpet when done properly but it should only be done in the cases of light stains and regular cleanings. It is not something that will be able to get gum or other harmful substances like that out of your carpet entirely. Where this does excel is that it is fast, simple, inexpensive, and uses a minimal amount of water which will lead to a quicker drying time.
Typically most professional cleaning services do not use this method simply because it does not get deep enough into the carpet and it is not able to get the tough stains out. We prefer to use the wet method or more commonly known as steam cleaning. With that method the carpet is preconditioned with a chemical that liquefies the soil in the carpet fibers. Water is then heated to near the boiling point, pressurized, and injected into the carpet. After 10-15 minutes the carpet is vacuumed up after a complete cleaning. This is the most widely used method in the world and is recommended by most cleaning professionals.
